Reflection on project

Throughout this project, I learned a lot about rhetoric and started thinking differently about approaching ideas and how to depict them to viewers. I really feel like I pushed myself in this assessment by experimenting with different design techniques and developing my skills in Illustrator. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and experimented with new techniques that I haven’t explored before, such as pastiche. I have a better understanding on the relationship between text and image and in creating works that are visually engaging and emotive to the audience. It was challenging to think of alternative ways of approaching the same subject matter and in turn, creating 2 posters from it. I feel that this project has helped me expand my way of thinking which is helpful for future projects. Overall, I really enjoyed this project and am happy with my final posters. I think that my ideas come across visually and get people to think about the housing issue in New Zealand.

Week 6- Final Posters and Rationale

Image
Rationale My project is based on housing inequality, specifically the poor-quality flats rented by University students in New Zealand. Both posters aim to raise awareness on the impact of mouldy houses which consequently, affects the lives of people living there. I am directing these posters at landlords to encourage them to lift rental standards and make homes a healthier place. The ihi in the photographic poster derives its impact from the dark tones, the mouldy background and the imagery of a sad University student. Anger, disgust and motivation for a positive change is the wehi you receive from this work. The ihi in the illustrative poster derives its power from the gloomy colours and the horror inspired atmosphere. Shock and sombre is the wehi you receive from this work. To achieve the impact I wanted, one of my design choices was to use gas masks to exaggerate the issue. I also chose to use gloomy colours such as green, black and brown to portra...

Week 6 Monday

Image
We started class by pinning up our 2 final posters on the wall for final feedback. I really like the way that the 2 posters work together in showing my issue. My photographic poster is effective and the image and text work well together. My "house of horrors" poster shows a different approach to the issue and is projects a gloomy and sombre feeling. I added in some additional information to the posters explaining how mould can cause health problems such as asthma. I also added in #healthyhomesforall at the bottom of the text. I made some minor adjustments to both the posters and test printed it after class to ensure that everything was correct. Once I had checked that the posters were done, I sent them off to a printing company.

Week 5 Thursday

This class was time for one on one critique and feedback from Lee and Fay. In gaining some feedback from Lee, she suggested that I take my own photographs for one of my final posters as I am currently using an image from the internet. It was also suggested that I try to work on the heading for my illustrative poster and make it more bold. At the moment, the illustrative poster has a lot going on all at once and it is distracting the eye from the main focus. Lee also suggested that I make the housing scene in the background smaller. I am also going to experiment with steampunk style by using smoke in my poster. At the moment, Fay feels that my photographic poster is stronger and have more ihi. I just need to play around with the placement of the text as it is overlapping the gas mask at the moment. I also need to tighten up the fact section as the letters are quite spaced out at the moment. I will continue to work on the final touches of my 2 posters. I will also try and wor...

Week 5 Monday

Posters: Today, we went straight to studio class for our second interim presentation. We placed our 2 posters on the table and got into pairs to give feedback on other posters. I feel like I have a much clearer idea of the direction that I am heading towards. I received a lot of feedback which I was really happy about. Some of the feedback helped me realise what I need to improve on and further develop. I also had a chat to Fay and Lee and they said that I am doing well and gave me some ideas to work on for next class:  ·       Play around with the text, make it more horror  ·       For my illustrative poster, I could add something in the background to make it look more like a movie poster e.g. a horrible student flat, a map.  ·       Look at more information to put in and I was thinking of changing my statistic. For independent study, I will continue to cr...
