Week 3 Monday

Image
The lecture today focused on the relationship between word and image. We were shown a range of successful examples that showed the use of emphasis, question, clarification, contradiction and change. We did a quick exercise in class where each table was assigned to look at a collection of designs and we had to identify of they were juxtaposition, substitution or pastiche. This is the last class before our interim on Thursday so we spent the rest of the time reviewing our past work and sketches. I chose to revisit on my latest poster from last week and thought about ways on how I could improve on it. My aim for this poster is to exaggerate the image so it is striking to the viewer. I changed the headline to the colour red as I am trying to channel the horror feeling. I then added in extra information at the bottom of the headline. I also made the background darker to make the text stand out more. I want to depict that the person wearing a gas mask is a student so I added in a b...

week 2 Thursday

For todays class, we were to bring an article about our chosen topic. I brought a couple of articles so I would have more variety. Here are the links to the articles I chose: https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/104276809/mould-leaking-wastewater-disgusts-dunedin-student-flat-tenants https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/property/100796614/one-modest-twobed-wellington-flat-hundreds-of-inquiries-from-eager-renters https://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/337423/i-had-spores-and-fungi-in-my-system-wellington-renter With these articles, we were to read through them and  identify a headline, a sub heading or call to action, that could inspire a poster. The two headlines I was looking at were: House of Horrors A Typical Student Flat From this, I started sketching out thumbnails of ideas that I could use for my poster. This exercise was really enjoyable and I believe that I generated a lot of interesting ideas from the article I chose. I have started to narrow down my topic to eith...

Week 2 Monday

Week 2.1 We were shown a variety of posters and discussed fundamental design principles and different ways that posters work such as focussing the eye, simplifying, overlapping and so on. This presentation was very helpful and gave me a better understanding which can help me when designing my posters. In studio class, we did many exercises that I found helped me think creatively and outside the box. We did an a ssociation and representation exercise to start off. We were then randomly given phrases and we had to associate the sentence with our chosen topic.   I was given the phrases; “A fate worse than death”, “A wolf in sheep’s clothing” and “On the gravy train".  From my drawings, I chose an idea I liked and felt that I could develop it further. This idea can from combining the phrase, "A fate worse than death" and my issue, being housing inequality.  Poster:

Week 1 Thursday

This mornings lecture covered visual rhetoric by looking at examples of traditional and visual rhetoric. I found today’s class very helpful by thinking outside the box and dig deeper into the topics of inequality in New Zealand. Our studio class started off with us working as tables and mind mapping inequality topics in New Zealand. Our table was given the topic, health and we discussed issues within the system. This is what we came up with. Here are the mind maps for the other topics:       For the rest of studio class, we were given a random word and the exercise required us to create images and think of ideas to combine the word we were given to our chosen topic (mine was housing). I was given the words, 'tranquil', 'pig' and 'mask'. I found this exercise to be very helpful in creating new ideas that could be used for my final poster. I found some o...

Week 1 Monday

For our first class back, we were given a lecture in the pit where Matt discussed the brief, key marking criteria, and introduced us to our new project. We were also shown examples of persuasive works and discussed the ihi and wehi associated with the pieces. Our subject matter for this project is Inequality in New Zealand and we were introduced to matters involving race, wealth, gender, housing, education and so on. For studio time (I ended up in the wrong class) we first discussed as a class the definition of ihi and wehi, how it relates to us as creative practitioners and how do artists utilise them in their work. As a group we were given a specific set of images, we got set C and we were to identify: What is the ihi component? What is the wehi component? What are the characteristics that form these components? What has the designer used to generate this? Once we finished looking at the works, we had to pick an image and discuss it with the entire clas...
