Week 3 Thursday

Today is our interim presentation so we headed straight to studio class and placed our 4 posters on the table along with feedback sheets. These are my 4 posters that I presented to the class:







It was really inspiring to see what other people had done for their posters and to see their own take on the chosen topics. I found it extremely helpful to walk around and see what everyone else had been up to and the work they have produced so far. I was really 

happy with the feedback I received as there were some good suggestions on how to improve my work. I found that a lot people were intrigued by the gas mask poster and had said that it resonated with them. 

As I progress with my work, I want to further explore the gas mask idea. I had a talk to Fay and Lee afterwards and I will research World War 2 posters and propaganda, the Blitz, different illustration styles that I could do. I am also going to Te papa over the weekend to take photographs of gas masks in the Gallipoli exhibition. 

At the moment, I feel pretty good and on track with everything. My next step is to research more about gas masks, find some good statistics that I could use in my poster and to further develope my ideas for my posters.

We got into groups to look at our 2 posters and did a feedback activity fin terms of the coloured hats. Each of us showed our current posters and we as a table went around and gave feedback, depending on which card we were on. It was a really good session and I received some good ideas. Many said that my poster was relatable and that I should try and add a more student aspect into my posters. This mornings lecture covered visual rhetoric by looking at examples of traditional and visual rhetoric. I found today’s class very helpful by thinking outside the box and dig deeper into the topics of inequality in New Zealand. Our studio class started off with us working as tables and mind mapping inequality topics in New Zealand. Our table was given the topic, health and we discussed issues within the system. This is what we came up with. Here are the mind maps for the other topics:       For the rest of studio class, we were given a random word and the exercise required us to create images and think of ideas to combine the word we were given to our chosen topic (mine was housing). Week 6- Final Posters and Rationale

Rationale My project is based on housing inequality, specifically the poor-quality flats rented by University students in New Zealand. Both posters aim to raise awareness on the impact of mouldy houses which consequently, affects the lives of people living there. I am directing these posters at landlords to encourage them to lift rental standards and make homes a healthier place. The ihi in the photographic poster derives its impact from the dark tones, the mouldy background and the imagery of a sad University student. Anger, disgust and motivation for a positive change is the wehi you receive from this work. The ihi in the illustrative poster derives its power from the gloomy colours and the horror inspired atmosphere. Shock and sombre is the wehi you receive from this work.
