Week 1 Monday
For our
first class back, we were given a lecture in the pit where Matt discussed the
brief, key marking criteria, and introduced us to our new project. We were
also shown examples of persuasive works and discussed the ihi and wehi
associated with the pieces. Our subject matter for this project is Inequality
in New Zealand and we were introduced to matters involving race, wealth,
gender, housing, education and so on.
For studio time (I ended up in the wrong class) we
first discussed as a class the definition of ihi and wehi, how it relates to us
as creative practitioners and how do artists utilise them in their work. As a
group we were given a specific set of images, we got set C and we were to
identify:
What is the ihi component?
What is the wehi component?
What are the characteristics that
form these components?
What has the designer used to
generate this?
Once we finished looking at the works, we had to
pick an image and discuss it with the entire class. This is the image our group
chose:
This exercise was really helpful in allowing me to get my head around the different aspects on what ihi and wihi are. I feel that I have a better understanding of these concepts which will enable me to portray this in my own work.
After that,
we got into pairs and played Pictionary. The last thing we did as a class was
list inequality issues in New Zealand on the whiteboard before heading off to
hear 3 guest speakers.
For the
last hour, we headed to a lecture hall and listened to 3 guest speakers who
spoke about a variety of inequality issues such as race, income inequality,
Economic and inequality and gender inequality.
Reflecting
on this class, I feel that it has really opened my eyes up to the inequality
issues that New Zealand faces. It has gotten me thinking about subject matters
I could choose for my posters. One of the topics that really stuck with me was housing inequality. I have seen many of my friends family struggle with finding money to pay for their house. This is a topic that I feel passionate about and believe that I can create posters that successfully portray my issue and a lot of ihi.
For
independent study, I am going to find three works and repeat the process
of analysing the ihi & wehi that you did in the class exercise. I will also research articles and readings on inequality in New
Zealand and start thinking about what I could do for my posters. I have started
reading Max Rashbrooke's book The Inequality Debate: An introduction, but will
try to finish it as soon as possible.
We were also required to use the drawings from pictionary to create a poster and upload it to stream. This is my poster:
