Week 3 Monday

The lecture today focused on the relationship between word and image. We were shown a range of successful examples that showed the use of emphasis, question, clarification, contradiction and change.

 We did a quick exercise in class where each table was assigned to look at a collection of designs and we had to identify of they were juxtaposition, substitution or pastiche. This is the last class before our interim on Thursday so we spent the rest of the time reviewing our past work and sketches.

 I chose to revisit on my latest poster from last week and thought about ways on how I could improve on it.



My aim for this poster is to exaggerate the image so it is striking to the viewer. I changed the headline to the colour red as I am trying to channel the horror feeling. I then added in extra information at the bottom of the headline. I also made the background darker to make the text stand out more. I want to depict that the person wearing a gas mask is a student so I added in a backpack and placed a fern key chain to add a New Zealand aspect in.

 I feel like this poster is much better than the original. I believe that it is much more dramatic and that the viewer may be able to identify that the person in the poster is a student from the backpack. I also added a New Zealand keyring for the New Zealand aspect. I feel like I could continue to work on this. Overall, I am very happy with how this turned out and I will be using this as one of my posters for the interim presentation on Thursday.

We got into groups to look at our 2 posters and did a feedback activity fin terms of the coloured hats. Each of us showed our current posters and we as a table went around and gave feedback, depending on which card we were on. It was a really good session and I received some good ideas. Many said that my poster was relatable and that I should try and add a more student aspect into my posters. Week 1 Thursday

This mornings lecture covered visual rhetoric by looking at examples of traditional and visual rhetoric. I found today’s class very helpful by thinking outside the box and dig deeper into the topics of inequality in New Zealand. Our studio class started off with us working as tables and mind mapping inequality topics in New Zealand. Our table was given the topic, health and we discussed issues within the system. This is what we came up with. Here are the mind maps for the other topics:       For the rest of studio class, we were given a random word and the exercise required us to create images and think of ideas to combine the word we were given to our chosen topic (mine was housing). Week 6- Final Posters and Rationale

Rationale My project is based on housing inequality, specifically the poor-quality flats rented by University students in New Zealand. Both posters aim to raise awareness on the impact of mouldy houses which consequently, affects the lives of people living there. I am directing these posters at landlords to encourage them to lift rental standards and make homes a healthier place. The ihi in the photographic poster derives its impact from the dark tones, the mouldy background and the imagery of a sad University student. Anger, disgust and motivation for a positive change is the wehi you receive from this work. The ihi in the illustrative poster derives its power from the gloomy colours and the horror inspired atmosphere. Shock and sombre is the wehi you receive from this work.
